Hello peeps
Onyx here
Well that's another fine mess you've gotten me into!
Tonight was our annual homage to one of our fallen members.
A open PDI to celebrate his life and times with this club.
We had the loverly David Portwain up to call the shots. Now, while it appears he can be a bit brutal with his marking, if you listen and take in some of what he says, your photography will improve.
He cajoled us to look at the pictures.
Is it alive or just a record shot?
Is the train/bus moving?
Why have you taken the shot?
One of his catch phrases from the past was F8 @ five8. When i say catch phrase, I mean bitch! Too often he'd say "Why the big depth of field? Your only interest is the bit in the middle, open up your aperture and make it stand out!"
Likewise with the Five8, why is it taken at 5ft 8 inches ... crouch down and make the shot more dynamic.
& titles, he loves a quick witty title. Reckons that judges only have a short attention span, so if you can get the gist over to him in three words, so much the better. If you can make him smile, you've already gained a bonus point!
60 images we gave him tonight. Probably the limit as evenings go. We had 15 entrants, so had I pared it down we'd have been out of there by half nine!
some shots he rattled through very quickly, but then again he'd already made that particular point on a previous shot, so repeating himself would have made the evening boring. His banter and wit (for me) made the evening fly by, even though I was the target for most of his jokes.
OK, scores on the doors.
the average for the whole evening was just over seven a shot, though there were multiple fives. He held back eighteen for a second look. so that's thirty percent by my reckoning. For these 18 he reserved the scores of 8, 9 & 10.
6 photos got an eight, including
Big Kev's 'Can we wear binbags, Mum?'
Val's Peacock
& Steve's 'Hi Dad' a lovely image of ICM.
Then there was seven nines
Niel's 'Bluebells in Norsey Wood' & 'Himalayan Poppy'
Rob S's 'Make a bee Line' amongst others.
And then there were five Tens
Chris's 'Honda' full of movement
Colin's 'Apple Blossom' a lovely simple image.
in third we had Rob's 'Hunstanton Sea Defence' Love it.
Second was Richard's 'Sunshine After the Rain' truly beautiful image
And top of the heap
Chris's 'Hoots Mon' a beautiful shot of a Barn Owl. His only gripe would be that we view photos from left to right, so maybe the image might be better reversed ... but then again, if it was reversed and we viewed it left to right, I'd probably be complaining about the back of the bird stopping me going into the picture. Ah well, maybe belay that gripe!
as I may have intimated, I enjoyed the evening.
Not all of you will agree, but then again, we took a pasting at the recent Maldon Challenge, where that judge didn't seem to like anything we offered up!
Some you win, some you lose.
Ok, Byyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
